Active probing for information in control systems with quantized state measurements: A minimum entropy approach. (English) Zbl 0870.93038

The aim of the paper is to study the effect of state quantization in scalar discrete-time linear control systems by analyzing the system as a partially observed stochastic system. Using information theoretic measures and a general framework for estimation of stochastic systems, the feedback control policies are classified into families, and various properties for different performance measures and subfamilies of the feedback control families are established. Optimal feedback controls which minimize various types of entropy costs are determined, and it is shown that this problem is equivalent to an optimal control problem for a controlled Markov chain. Control optimizations and optimal probing contracting control laws are then computed. A simulation example is given, illustrating promising results.
