The dynamics of a Robertson-Walker universe containing a classical scalar field plus non-interacting radiation is examined. The dynamics of simple inflationary universe models is included. It is shown how a potential function for the scalar field can be found. The focus of the paper is the step of determining the required potential, given a desirable behaviour of the universe.
