Statisticians of the centuries. (English) Zbl 1016.01025

New York, NY: Springer. xii, 500 p. (2001).
The impressive volume entitled “Statisticians of the Century”, an initiative of the International Statistical Institute, represents an important scientific contribution, meant at emphasizing – if such an idea still needs to be acknowledged – the role played by statistics in the existence and development of any human activity.
Thus, the book records the main achievements of statistics along the centuries, and discusses the works of reputed representatives in this branch of the economic sciences.
After an alphabetical list of world’s famous statisticians, there follow 5 chapters, each one dedicated to a century, starting with the 16th one (“Probability prior to Pascal”). In the 17th century, special mention should be made of Fermat, Pascal, Neumann, Bernoulli; in the 18th one – Leclerc, D’Alembert, in the 19th one – Laplace, Malthus, Mendel, while the 20th century records the longest list – the last name being that of Deming, the death of which, actually, determined the realization of this volume.
Excellent graphical presentation!
