Summary: We propose an alternative initial approach for the concept of derivative. The authors have been testing this approach with first calculus course students and secondary math teachers. Based upon a theoretical framework introduced by David Tall, the authors present the derivative using local straightness notion for visualizing function graphs generated by computers.
