Making international comparisons: the Third International Mathematics and Science Study. Book review. (English)
Br. J. Curric. Assess. 8, No. 3, 33-38 (1998).
These five books are reports produced by the National Foundation for Educational Research in England and Wales on the achievements of students in England compared with those in the other countries involved in the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). They are largely based on the international reports produced by the TIMSS centre in Boston College. The complete data from the TIMMS study, as well as the international reports, and a large proportion of the actual items used can be downloaded (free!) from the TIMSS website at http://wwwcsteep.bc.edu/timss. In this extended review, I will outline some of the history of international comparisons, and highlight some of the technical difficulties that beset such studies. After a brief discussion of the extent to which these difficulties are addressed in TIMSS, I shall draw out some of the main findings. (orig.)
