Bamana sand divination. Recursion in ethnomathematics. (English)
Am. Anthropol. 99, No. 1, 112-122 (1997).
Reflecting on his fieldwork realized among Bamana (or Bambara) diviners, the author compares their use of recursion, where the iterative function is addition modulo 2, with Cantor’s recursion (Cantor set), and hypotheses that an African concept of selfgenerated fecundity is the shared origin of both the Bamana divination and transfinite set theory.
