Using reform pedagogy to improve students’ application skills in college remedial mathematics courses. (English)

From the introduction: How does a postsecondary remedial mathematics instructor improve students’ abilities to solve application problems without sacrificing their procedural skills and course pass rates? This article will present the results of a quasi-experimental study in which students who were taught using reform mathematics pedagogy scored significantly higher ($p<0.05$) on application problems than did students who were taught using traditional lecture, without reduction of procedural skills or pass rates.
