In this study the authors developed a model causally relating general self-esteem and mathematics achievement through basic intervening variables supported by social cognitive theory. A structural equation model was used to examine the paths from mathematics achievement to general self-esteem and vice versa. The data, collected from 308 preservice primary school teachers, provided a good fit to the model developed.
