Understanding students’ reasoning while comparing expressions. (English)

In the paper, the authors analyse grade 6 students’ reasoning in some tasks, which involved comparing two simple expressions. The tasks allowed students to move from procedural to structural understanding of simple expressions. Analysis of students’ responses revealed various patterns of thinking and different ways of communicating the reasons. Students were found to justify their responses using language or symbols. The students moved from using predominantly language to using symbols predominantly, as the expressions became more complex. (orig.)
