Reflections on an exponential mirror. (English)
Math. Gaz. 91, No. 520, 59-62 (2007).
Summary: If the sun is reflected in a circular cylinder, the illuminated part of the cylinder’s base is bounded by part of a nephroid ‒ the curve obtained by rolling a circle round another circle with twice the radius. This article considers the caustic, the cross sections of reflections in a curved mirror, which has the form of a catenary or hyperbolic cosine.
