Using an experiment in portfolios in the middle school classroom. (English)

Math. Teach. Middle Sch. 13, No. 7, 404-409 (2008).

Summary: Standard classroom tests tend to showcase what students know at that point in time and do not usually reflect real-life mathematics. They are not always accurate indicators of what students understand and how they understand it. Portfolios are tools that allow students a better opportunity to exhibit mathematical growth in understanding and attitude over time. This article describes how one teacher used portfolios as an alternative assessment in her mathematics classroom. (Contains 4 figures.) (ERIC)
