The authors describe an experiment realized in a class of Algebra in undergraduate course of Mathematics. The students were asked to discuss a problem presented in the book "Introduction to Mathematics History" by Howard Eves. The various interpretations of the data and the presented examples and contraexamples showed the ambiguity of the situation. The different answers were attributed to the lack of precision of the problem formulation, which can be turned to advantage for didactic purpose.
