Summary: The aim of this paper is to inquire into the challenges and constraints faced by a didactician when trying to build a partnership with a mathematics teacher for a co-learning agreement. Data from introductory meetings between the didactician and the teacher and observations from her classroom are analysed in a search for understanding of the character of the co-learning relation. The study reported here is part of a larger developmental research project, ‘Teaching better mathematics’, building on the concepts of inquiry and learning community.
