This article is written on the bicentenary of the birth of George Green; he did much original work but his reputation increased after his death since his ideas were ahead of his time and also limited by irregular family circumstances. This appreciation of Green looks at his personal life and his work, which included Green’s theorem and Green’s functions: the latter are indispensable in nuclear physics.
