The evolution of cognition. (English)
J. Struct. Learn. Intell. Syst. 14, No. 4, 415-432 (2001).
This paper provides an evolutionary perspective of cognition. First, a short review of what is generally known about human evolution is provided. Implications for the development of memory and learning are then noted. An extended discussion of language from an evolutionary perspective follows. The conclusion from this historical evidence is that the two neural networks in humans responsible for simple naming and more complex language transformations developed at different times. Implications for learning are briefly indicated in the concluding section.
