FURST ‒ a symbiotic approach to research at primarily undergraduate institutions. (English)
Peterson, Mark A. (ed.) et al., Directions for mathematics research experience for undergraduates. Based on the conference “New directions for mathematics research experiences for undergraduates", Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA, USA, June 21‒22, 2013. Hackensack, NJ: World Scientific (ISBN 978-981-4630-31-3/hbk; 978-981-4630-33-7/ebook). 17-31 (2016).
Summary: The FURST program is designed to address two commonly cited problem areas of a traditional REU: (i) great variations in students’ level of preparation, and (ii) the difficulty of following up with the completion of the research after the summer program is over. The program serves faculty as well as student interest, in order to address concerns about the benefits of involving junior faculty in undergraduate research mentoring.
