On the origins of logarithms and the constant “$e$". (Sulle origini dei logaritmi e della costante “$e$".) (Italian)
Archimede 67, No. 4, 197-205 (2015).
Summary: We examine Napier’s twenty-year work in order to publish his tables of logarithm. The tables were a tool for the simplification of trigonometric calculations required by cartography and astronomy of XVI century. These boards implicitly identify the famous constant “$e$”, unknown by Napier, by means of which an original kinematic definition became possible.
