Making sense of representations: card sorting. (English)
Math. Teach. (Reston) 109, No. 5, 380-383 (2015).
From the text: Why is slope so important? How can I write an equation that passes through these points? Why do we need to know three different equations for the same parabola? These are just three of the questions students often ask that demonstrate their difficulty connecting different representations of relations and functions. Card-sorting activities can be useful in helping students make sense of these connections because they ask students to analyze multiple representations of functions simultaneously. Two examples of card-sorting activities are described here.
