Summary: This work aims at studying representations and spontaneous strategies developed by fifth-year primary school children, who have to solve challenging problems by co-operating in small groups. The children were made to read, analyze and solve problems which were considered the most difficult for such an age group, which is the so-called zone of proximal development. The teacher’s role was that of observer-director who intrudes as little as possible in the decisive processes of his pupils.
