Summary: This paper draws from research literature and a pilot study on the incorporation of outreach and community engagement in mathematics teacher education. The discussion highlights ways in which such programs effectively supplement requirements for classroom-based field experiences and considers the benefits for both future teachers as well as the learners for which the programs are designed. Development of university-community partnerships are also highlighted as an important outcome. The integration of research perspectives culminates in implications for future research and teacher education program development.
