Summary: This chapter provides observations about challenges and opportunities regarding the strengths of South Korea mathematics education program. The challenges and opportunities discussed are aligned with findings of an ongoing study of Korean elementary teachers’ mathematical knowledge for teaching mathematics. The major argument is that current reform-based instruction is to educate for the future and not the present. Three qualities of the current reform movement support this argument: retooling teaching and learning to develop creativity, problem solving and communication.
