The article presents a brief portrayal of the life and work of the French mathematician and revolutionary Gaspard Monge (1746‒1818), one of Fourier’s teachers who accompanied Napoleon on his expedition to Egypt. He was one of the founders of modern pure mathematics and a specialist in geometry, almost the first since Apollonius of Perga.
