Summary: The paper discusses the concept of a determinant and its connections to other mathematical concepts in courses of linear algebra, at both secondary and tertiary levels from a curricular point of view. It also identifies two recourses for students’ difficulties in understanding the concept and offers a teaching approach with applets created by dynamic geometrie software. The designed applets are supported by proposed exercises, which aim to widen students’ concept images of a determinant.
