Summary: The author reflects on current issues taking a global perspective on the how and why of mathematics. ‘Global’ is becoming something of a current ‘buzzword’. The addition of ‘Global’ to words such as ‘economy’, or ‘challenge’ is a device that seeks to add credibility and status in the mind of the reader. But, mathematics education must be part of, and reflect the ‘global’ reality of both educational and career choices beyond 16+ for learners in classrooms. Tables of comparative data cannot tell the ‘whole story’, or even ‘how it really is’, so detail ‘beyond the table’ is vital to sense making of the data, and educational planning for the future. This piece is both well researched, and argued in the context of mathematical literacy.
