Kindergarten children’s reasoning about basic geometric shapes. (English)

Summary: We attempted to investigate the criteria used by preschool children in distinguishing basic geometric shapes, namely circles, rhombus, squares, triangles and rectangles. Besides the detection of the syncretic level as it was described by {\it D. H. Clements} et al. [J. Res. Math. Educ. 30, No. 2, 192‒212 (1999; ME 1999e.03263)], analysis of our observations revealed seeds of relational thinking in very early age, which via suitable collaborative tasks designed by teachers may advance preschoolers geometric thinking.
