Summary: We present a report of an ongoing research focused on identifying the factors that motivated Mexican female students to choose mathematics as a career. The main body of data for the research was generated through semi-structured interviews. The preliminary results show that three are the main factors that motivated women in the sample to choose mathematics as a career: (1) to be aware of the fact that they are good at mathematics, (2) the influence of their mathematics teachers, and (3) the influence of their relatives. We suggest that these three factors promote the constitution of a mathematical identity, which in turn favors the choice of mathematics as a career.
