Invitation to a mathematical festival. Translated from the Russian by Anna Fedorova. Translation edited by Tatiana Shubin and Silvio Levy. (English)
MSRI Mathematical Circles Library 12. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (AMS); Berkeley, CA: Mathematical Sciences Research Institut (ISBN 978-0-8218-6905-5/pbk). xix, 172~p. (2013).
This is a collection of problems for sixth or seventh grade students (aged 13‒14) proposed to pupils during mathematical festivals. The first event was organized in 1990 by the teachers of the mathematics club at the Moscow State University; from 1994, it is supported by the Department of Education of the Moscow State University and by the Moscow Institute of Open Education. The book is based on the third extended Russian edition published in 2009 and contains Olympiad-type problems from mathematical festivals held in 1990‒2011 with complete solutions or solution hints. It is dedicated to the memory of Dima Botin who was one of the initiators and organizers of these events. Since many problems do not require advanced knowledge of mathematics, the text appeals to a very wide audience of mathematics fans. Challenging and inspiring problems in this collection will help to develop reader’s mathematical skills, stimulate creative thinking and promote further interest to the subject.
