Summary: This tribute to Ole Skovsmose offers a personal insider reflection. It is a description of a particular doctoral education setting and attempts to explain the success of the programme, the challenges faced and the lessons it can offer particularly about how international doctoral studies programmes are set up that straddle the so-called North-South or developed-developing world divides. It draws on my experiences as a student in the project and no doubt relies both on my memories dimmed by time and now my accumulated experiences as supervisor some fifteen years later. It also shows how a particular pedagogy evolved and has come to take root in creative and very productive forms.
