The article presents a short depiction of the life and work of Charles Hutton (1737‒1823), Professor of Mathematics at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich, who was responsible for the calculation of the density of the Earth from Maskelyne’s excellent observations. An example from Hutton’s text book {\it A course of mathematics} is also given.
