Teaching statistical thinking in the data deluge. (English)
Wassong, Thomas (ed.) et al., Mit Werkzeugen Mathematik und Stochastik lernen. Heidelberg: Springer Spektrum (ISBN 978-3-658-03103-9/pbk; 978-3-658-03104-6/ebook). 377-391 (2014).
Summary: Engaging with data is at the heart of statistical thinking, but readily-available data are now complex and large, and so statistical thinking is perhaps also more complex than in the recent past. We discuss an undergraduate event, DataFest, as a means for supplementing classroom approaches to teaching statistical thinking, and discuss lessons learned from observations during two DataFests held at two universities in the United States.
