How young students deal with recognition and conversion tasks of graphs. (English)
Acta Didact. Univ. Comen., Math. 13, 1-16 (2013).
Summary: This study aims to describe how young students deal with data representation tasks in which the type of graphical representation changes. Specifically, it examines second and third grade students’ performance in recognition and conversion tasks of graphs when the pictograph in the task changes to bar chart. Data were collected from 150 primary school students and they were analysed by using the similarity and the implicative analyses. The survey results show that students responded differently depending on the type of graphical representation that the tasks include or the type of semiotic transformation that they require. In addition, students’ consistency towards the tasks varied according to gender and age of the students.
