Students’ understanding of the monotonicity of exponential functions. (English)

Summary: The purpose of this study is to describe and analyse a model for students’ transition from comparing exponents to the monotonicity of exponential functions within the context of operational and structural processes. The study was conducted with 193 11th grade students with the use of a test. The findings suggest that in this transition there are three phases, which are described in terms of Sfard’s three-phase theory, interiorization, condensation and reification. Students’ various difficulties emerged during this transition which are described and discussed.
