Social structures in mathematics education. Researching the history of mathematics education with theories and methods from the sociology of education. (English)

Summary: I discuss the need to include a sociological perspective in research on the history of mathematics education. This need is linked to two motives for studying the history of mathematics education. The first concerns how research in the history of mathematics education may contribute to the general history of education. The second motive concerns how research in mathematics education may benefit from research on the history of mathematics education. I also show how theories and methods from the sodology of education can be applied. Moreover, I make a comparison with recent research on the history of mathematics education that applies sociological perspectives and how my kind of research may contribute. The paper ends with an outline of my future research.
