Summary: This chapter explores different teaching approaches to the use of computer software in mathematics. In particular teaching and research conducted within the Nordic countries on dynamic geometry software (DGS) use are considered. The theoretical perspective ‘instrumental approach’, originating in French didactics of mathematics, is used to characterize and discuss three earlier reported teaching approaches and one new, all situated within developmental projects at the university. The chapter suggests that the instrumental approach contributes with theoretical lenses illustrating teachers’ orchestration of students’ possible mathematical learning when using computer software.
