The author has created a useful text designed to acquaint the reader with the fundamental concepts involved in the first year of mathematical study. In particular, he touches upon the notions of topology, algebra, vector space, measure and integral. New concepts are introduced and illuminated by means of helpful examples that relate the new ideas to the basic concepts from which they have grown, and proofs of theorems are carefully presented. Following each chapter of the text, the author provides directions to other source material with which the reader might engage with a view to extending his knowledge of the subjects herein discussed, and the work concludes with an appendix treating some basic set-theoretical concepts.
