Chance 16, No. 1, 49-54 (2003).
The author discusses the scoring data of the outstanding National Hockey League player Wayne Gretzky by addressing three questions. First, he shows that the Poisson distribution provides a great fit for points, goals, and assists for Gretzky (and I would guess all hockey players). Second, using this modeling of Gretzky’s scoring ability, he discusses that with all these scoring records, he does not have the record for most points in a game. Lastly, as with many other studies, there is no evidence of a hot hand effect for Gretzky.
