Mathematics: the greatest subject in the world. (English)

This article is based on the presidential address earlier in the year, with the key words of enthusiasm and challenge. It starts with mentioning key advances in mathematics over the last thirty years, including the four-colours theorem, Fermat’s last theorem and sphere-packing. It goes on to discuss other problems which are accessible at school level, including magic squares and cryptography.
