We have divided this chapter into two major forms of assessment - classroom assessment and large-scale assessment - given that some of the issues and questions about these two kinds of assessment are necessarily different. We deal first with classroom assessment, using the six assessment standards from Assessment Standards for School Mathematics (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 1995) as our organizer. We look at recent research that sheds light on classroom assessment in relation to each of the six standards. Next, we examine issues in large-scale assessment. (Authors’ Overview)
