What students know about measurement: Perspectives from the National Assessment of Educational Progress. (English)
Clements, Douglas H. et al., Learning and teaching measurement. 2003 yearbook. National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Reston, VA (ISBN 0-87353-539-1). 195-207 (2003).
Measurement topics appear on commonly used standardized tests and large-scale assessments, one of the most visible of which is the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). In the current NAEP framework (National Assessment Governing Board 2000), measurement is one of five content strands. This strand includes topics such as selecting and using appropriate measurement instruments (for example, rulers and protractors) and appropriate units of measurement in both standard and metric systems; converting from one measurement unit to another within the same system; and computing and comparing perimeter, area, surface area, and volume. In this paper, we will discuss what U.S. students know about measurement on the basis of the results of the NAEP assessment.
