Use measuring penny to introduce the unit. (English)
Teach. Child. Math. 9, No. 2, 70-74 (2002).
For improving the understanding of measurement the students need more experiences in planning and doing measurements; they need practice in estimating a reasonable answer and checking the result against that estimate; and they need to build confidence in comparing nonstandard to standard measurements. To introduce the unit, Measuring Penny, written and illustrated by Loreen Leedy, stimulates the children’s thinking about measurement, provides a beginning assessment for the teacher of what the students know and understand about measurement, and pinpoints areas in which the students need additional practice and knowledge.
