A comparison of integer addition and subtraction problems presented in American and Chinese mathematics textbooks. (English)
Sowder, Judith et al., Lessons learned from research. National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Reston, VA (ISBN 0-87353-526-X). 151-154 (2002).
Integer addition and subtraction problems in several U.S. and Chinese mathematics textbooks were compared to illuminate the cross-national similarities and differences in expectations related to students’ mathematics experiences in the United States and China. The differences found in problems’ performance requirements indicate that the U.S. textbooks included more variety in problem requirements than the Chinese textbooks. The results are relevant to documented cross-national differences in U.S. and Chinese students’ mathematical performances. (orig.)
