Taking examples from the Target Oriented Curriculum, a recent Hong Kong curriculum reform, we extend the meaning of mathematical literacy from a mere mastering of the skills and ideas in the subject to include the five fundamental ways of learning: communicating, inquiring, conceptualizing, reasoning and problem solving. Examples illustrating some of these processes are included. (Authors’ abstract)
