First principles of instruction. (English)

This paper outlines five first principles for instructional design. A review of current instructional design theories shows that each of these theories support these first principles. These principles indicated that effective instruction is problem-based and involves four phases of instruction: activating existing relevant knowledge, demonstrating the knowledge and skill to the learner, providing opportunity for the learner to apply the new knowledge and skill, and providing an opportunity for the learner to integrate this new knowledge and skill into their everyday life. Learning is facilitated to the extent that a given theory, product, or learning environment implements these first principles of instruction.
