The Junior Balkan Mathematical Olympiad. (English)

This article discusses a relatively new olympiad, the Junior Balkan Mathematical Olympiad (JBMO). This was first held in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, in June 1997. The member countries are Albania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Republic of Macedonia, Hellas, Republic of Moldava, Romania, Turkey and Yugoslavia. The Balkan Olympiad takes place in June each year and is hosted by one of the member countries. Each team consists of five students under the age of 15 1/2. The aims of the Olympiad include - challenging, encouraging and developing of mathematically gifted school children in all participating member countries; - fostering friendly relationships among students and teachers of the participating countries; - creation of opportunities for the exchange of information on school syllabuses and practice within the member countries.
