Stanislaw Ulam 1909‒1984. (English)
Math. Gaz. 83, No. 496, 10-24 (1999).
This is a brief biography of Ulam, a prodigously talented mathematician of the first rank who worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. He used abstract and abstruse techniques to predict the behaviour of the atomic bomb. The biography describes his Polish and his American years, with three mathematical appendices on measures and large cardinals, ergodics and lucky numbers.
