Usiskin, Zalman, Developments in school mathematics education around the world. Vol. 4. NCTM, Reston, VA (ISBN 0-87353-473-5). 3-22 (1999).
Examines a perspective where a synthesis between Piagetian and Vygostkian ideas is sought. The author refers to this synthesis as a systematic view of intelligence. This conception is discussed and applied to the understanding of simple number concepts. A further section deals with multiplicative reasoning and its development in and out of school. The concluding section discusses the consequences of this approach for the definition of numeracy.
