Throughout their schooling, students build mathematical toolkits ‒ a collection of all the mathematics they have internalized. Since it may be difficult for students to explore new mathematical territory without guidance and sufficient experience in mathematical reasoning, helping them learn to use their toolkits properly is an important way to promote mathematical reasoning. This paper describes what North Shore High School’s Mathematics Research Program has done to provide students with opportunities to tap into their mathematical toolkits and engage in solid, yet accessible, mathematics.
