Forging links with projects in mathematics. (English)

Two examples illustrate the mathematics department’s conception of projects for students in geometry and advanced algebra courses. Both these projects were designed to establish links between a unit in the respective course and the mathematics of business and commerce. The projects supply a context for substantial exploration with arithmetic computations linked to the concepts, formulas, and relationships studied in the classroom. Students formalize and generalize their explorations with papers that complete the projects. (orig.) Ideas for further projects are given.
