One of the more promising authentic tools for assessing students’ mathematical understanding that has emerged from the reform of school mathematics is the performance-assessment task. This paper examines students’ responses to a mathematics performance-assessment task that teachers have created and used to assess their students’ mathematical knowledge. In particular, individual students’ responses to the task Deer Population are analyzed to reveal the importance of algorithms in the solution processes. (orig.)
