The author discusses the pros and cons of some new trends in U.S. Calculus textbooks, such as Douglas-Hallett, Gleason et al., Calculus, Wiley, New York, 1994, mainly focusing on the changes occurring in the role of definitions and proofs. He then compares these changes with the Italian situation, which remains tied to a very traditional approach, taking Cecconi-Stampacchia, Analisi Matematica, Liguori, Napoli, 1966‒1974 as an example.
